Dealing with a Quarrel Case
Situation: A foreigner hit a bus driver, following an argument is taking place. Police received a call from the civilian and respond to the quarrel case.
Dialogue 對話:
P. (Police) Good afternoon, my name is Sean Lien, Officer of Foreign Affairs Police Department in Taipei City Police Department. May I know your name and unit please?
F. (Foreigner) Good day, Officer Lien. My name is Janet. I am a stewardess in the Pam Airlines.
P. This bus driver has just reported to us that you hit him badly, is that true?
F. Yes, Sir, that is true.
P. Would you please tell me what had happened?
F. Well, I took his-bus here from Taipei Main Station and the bus driver wanted me to pay a double fare(1) to him. As you know, we usually pay one fare for such a distance. When I paid the same amount, he refused to accept it and threw my easy card(2) away. Meanwhile, he held me by the arm and would not let me go. I was so mad that I hit him with my shoulder bag on his head.
P. I am sorry, my friends. I think both of you were wrong. One should not hit the other, and the other should be rational.
F. I feel really sorry. So far as the Chinese regulations are concerned, what should I do then?
P. Since you are a visitor from a foreign country and nobody is seriously injured, I will not take you to the police station for your first offense in Taiwan. Maybe I think we would better settle it right here.
F. That would be fine. However, I have to get back to my hotel in a hurry.
P. Well, will you apologize and pay certain amount of money to the bus driver right away? The bus driver is reasonable. I believe he will accept your apology if you are sincere.
F. Is that right? Do not you think the bus driver cheated me?
P. Absolutely not. I think this incident is only caused by mutual misunderstanding.
F. Can I have a discount(3) for the fare?
P. The fare rate is fixed by the authority(4), so I do not think there is any bargain(5).
F. As you know I am a stranger here therefore, I am always afraid that some public servicemen are not honest.
P. You do not have to worry about that in Taiwan. You can count on me.
F. O.K. Since you look so straightforward, I will believe you this time. Maybe it is my fault this time. Forgive me, please. I did not mean it.
P. Please do not mention it. You are welcome any time. Have a good trip.
F. Thank you, I will. Good-bye!
再見!
P. Good-bye!
